Please stop DNR on 4K / Blu-ray physical media releases
Il problema
To Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal, et al.
With the introduction of physical media disc formats such as Blu-ray and now 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, the potential quality of film restorations has reached impressive heights.
Yet major studios bullishly insist on employing Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) and grain management tools, scrubbing the films' picture of both details and their original texture as well as introducing erratic artifacts.
Film grain is a natural part of media captured on celluloid. As such it should remain intact on new High Definition and Ultra High Definition formats.
So called "boutique labels" (such Arrow Video, Vinegar Syndrome and The Criterion Collection) often set the example on how to tastefully handle film grain and textures, and are finding the favor of buyers worldwide.
While undoubtedly a first world problem, it is about time that consumers can trust studios in not messing up the quality of film restorations through the objectionable implementation of DNR and grain management (without even mentioning the unfortunate cases in which AI has been applied to "restore" a motion picture).
Thanks for your attention.
