The Issue

In 1964, Marvel Comics introduced the Spider-Man villain Mysterio, the Master of Illusion, in "The Amazing Spider-Man", volume one, #13.  Mysterio is a former stunt man and special effects expert who first used his talents to frame Spider-Man for a series of robberies and used the identity of Mysterio in order to capture Spider-Man and be celebrated as a hero.  Although his real name Quentin Beck would not be revealed until the 1980s, Mysterio is one of Spider-Man's most persistent and classic villains.

In 2020, Hasbro released the first wave of six figures of the "Marvel Legends: Retro Spider-Man" toyline - Spider-Man, Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy with an alternate head of Mary Jane Watson, Daredevil in his black armored costume, Electro, and the Green Goblin, respectively.  The toys used the same box art and packaging design as Toy Biz's "Spider-Man: The Animated Series" toyline.  Later in 2020, Hasbro made a sold-separately "Marvel Legends: Retro Spider-Man" action figure of Mysterio that included smoke accessories, but it did not include an alternate civilian head for Mysterio.  The figure has since been re-released by Hasbro in 2026 for fans to add to their collection.

In 2025, Hasbro released a "Marvel Legends: Retro Spider-Man" figure of Mysterio based on the 1994 "Spider-Man" animated series, with a new alternate civilian head of Quentin Beck based on the cartoon.  Fans are hopeful that Hasbro will make a new action figure of Mysterio for either their "Marvel Legends: Retro Spider-Man" toyline or for the "Marvel Legends: Maximum Series" toyline that includes one or two civilian heads, energy blast accessories for his hands, and new fog/smoke accessories.  When Hasbro does make a new action figure of Mysterio in his classic comic book outfit, fans hope that the figure's helmet and cape are redesigned to better fit on the figure and to include alternate civilian heads for Quentin Beck in his first appearance look with black hair and blue eyes, Daniel Berkhart the second Mysterio, and possibly of J. Jonah Jameson as a nod to "The Mysterio Manifesto" three-part comic book mini-series.
