Please Help Keep Our Family Together – Mohamad Faces Deportation to Danger

The issue

My name is Wahidi Al Sahmarani, and I’m reaching out to you because my family is facing an unimaginable situation. My husband Mohamad, who has lived and worked hard in Australia for 16 years, is facing deportation to Lebanon in November—the same month I am due to give birth to our third child by C-section. While our government is urging Australians in Lebanon to leave immediately due to escalating violence, they are still planning to send Mohamad back to a country that is far from safe. How can the government justify sending Mohamad to a place they themselves say is too dangerous for Australians? I am scared for my husband and our family’s future.

Mohamad has been an incredible stepfather to our two children, Eyad and Khaled, who are both Australian citizens. Khaled was born with a rare genetic disease affecting his vision, and he relies on ongoing care and disability support here in Australia. If Mohamad is forced to leave, it could mean losing Khaled's support through the NDIS, disrupting the care he depends on. The thought of navigating Khaled’s complex medical needs without Mohamad’s support is overwhelming.

Mohamad has been the backbone of our family, helping me breathe again after years of hardship. After successful IVF treatment, we are preparing to welcome a new life, and the thought of him not being by my side when I give birth terrifies me. If Mohamad is forced to apply for a partner visa offshore, we may have no choice but to follow him to Lebanon, a move that would devastate our children’s lives, disrupt their stability, and expose our family to danger.

We’re calling on Minister Tony Burke to intervene compassionately before it’s too late. Mohamad’s visa will expire in November, and we need urgent intervention to keep our family together. Please stand with us to keep our family safe. For the sake of our children, help us prevent Mohamad from being deported to a country where his life is at risk. Sign and share our petition today and email the Minister so he can consider my husband’s application on compassionate grounds and give a permanent residence.
