Good afternoon, my name is Tammy Goodson. I live in southwest Virginia, Independence, Virginia, to be precise. As a 54-year-old woman, I've faced a tremendous challenge after falling and breaking my hip 13 days ago. I was transferred from Galax Hospital to Winston Salem Hospital, where I underwent surgeries for multiple fractures before being released. My physician or nurse asked if I'd be willing to enter intensive rehab to address my leg pain and regain mobility. After some consideration, I agreed. However, the nurses informed me that I'd been denied admission to 37 facilities due to a past felony record, stemming from a registered sex offender status 22 years ago. I was deeply hurt and cried, struggling to comprehend how someone in my situation could be denied medical assistance. Despite my desperate need for care, I was sent home without a wheelchair, walker, or any medical equipment. Since then, I've contacted multiple facilities, only to find that most have policies prohibiting treatment for sex offenders. As a grandmother raising three young children, I'm determined to regain my ability to walk. I've started a petition on www.change.org/help Grandma Tammy, highlighting the urgent need for change. Despite reaching out to my state trooper, compliance officer, courts, and attorneys, I've been informed that individuals with a sex offense record can be denied medical care. I firmly believe this is wrong. Virginia, I urge you to reconsider your stance. I'm not a sex offender; I was wrongly classified. I didn't meet the elements of violence, and I was the initial complainant who reported my son's sexual assault 27 years ago. Now, 27 years later, I'm being denied medical care. What will happen to me if I never regain my ability to walk? Will nursing homes reject me, leaving me without a home? WDBJ 7, I implore you to consider sharing my story, shedding light on this critical issue, and inspiring change.
