Keeping this one short and sweet but kicking off with a sincere thanks to all park users who engaged with our volunteers over the last two weeks – the support has been simply overwhelming and really motivating us to keep spreading the word.
#NothingAboutUsWithoutUs
There are many catalysts for our actions but creating public awareness is key:
- if people agree or disagree, so be it, but at least we’ve reignited a debate about what the community really wants and not what a handful of stakeholders think the community needs
- if people didn’t engage, that would be a fate for worse and not bode well for the future as more and more decisions would pass us by unchallenged
That decisions regarding public land are being made at meetings with no public minutes and only certain stakeholders involved (and not resident groups) is abhorrent and wreaks of bad governance not to mention raises more serious questions around potential conflicts of interest.
Two other bits of feedback from meeting with park users and local residents:
- So many were unaware of the plans which worryingly shows that DLRCOCO’s communications plan failed, be that by accident or design. Unlike the longer public consultation period that accompanied the original draft Masterplan and two very heated and totally inadequate public meetings (if you were there, you’ll know!), there has been no public consultation meetings, in person or online, on this occasion. Nor was there any announcement on the Parks section of the DLRCOCO website in the newsfeed. It’s almost as if public feedback was an inconvenience, as evidenced by the almost entire dismissal of public opposition in the “Have Your Say Public Consultation Report" given the new Phase One proposal seeks to deliver facilities at a much greater scale and intensity of use than was ever suggested in any of the earlier documentation provided by DLRCOCO to Councillors and public alike.
- When hearing of the plans, the overwhelming reaction has been disbelief at the complete inappropriateness of the Phase One plans given the diminishing park footprint and existing active recreation areas that are ripe for upgrading. Traffic and parking chaos, destruction of habitat, public safety, child and vulnerable person safeguarding, importance of open space for head space and mental health, costs, site suitability, noise pollution, anti-social behaviour, and the significantly elevated risk of accident/death through more vehicles on local roads and narrow estates hitting a child or blocking the route of emergency services are just some of the issues the people are raising – there are many, many more.
What do we want to achieve?
On behalf of passive park users who represent the vast majority of Shanganagh Park's "clients", we demand DLRCOCO and Councillors to demonstrate civic leadership, environmental stewardship and respect for public opinion to immediately intervene to:
- Put a stop to the destructive Phase One proposals;
- Preserve the central meadowland as is; and
- Focus on the enhancement of existing sport facilities in the park and surrounding locality.
Do more. Do Better.
The park, the people and sports practitioners deserve it.
