Please help Lyndon achieve his dream of being able to compete in athletics/cross country.
The issue
Lyndon was born with Optic Nerve Dyspepsia, which means he is vision impaired. He has no sight in his right eye and limited vision in his left eye.
He is limited in what sports he can participate in. He is a huge soccer fan and wanted to play soccer so after being knocked back by two clubs I found one that was willing to take him on. Due to the speed of the game he only played one season as he could not follow the ball. Two years ago he made it through to the state team in athletics, but I did not know he needed a VI (vision impairment) classification so unfortunately he could not compete.
This year he made the state team in cross country. He was assessed by Vision Australia but his application for classification was rejected by Paralympic, as they say he failed on his field of vision which was just over 60° but needed to be less than 40°. This has again stopped him from competing at state level.
Paralympic have only three classifications, B1, B2 and B3. These classifications are for athletes with more severe vision impairment, for both children and adults, there is no separate classification for children.
Paralympic advised that if his sight changes (worsens) which I sincerely hope it doesn't he can reapply.
They also advised that if he gets two rejections he will be declared "not fit" for Paralympics, meaning he'll never be able to compete.
They have sent me a list of other blind sports that have more classifications eg blind golf and blind table tennis to name a few.
He doesn't want to compete in another sport as he has developed as passion for athletics and cross country. Not to mention he'll run the risk of another rejection and not being able to compete at all.
The disappointment on his face when I told him he couldn't compete was heart breaking.
I am petitioning the Government and Paralympic to add more classifications so that Lyndon and other children like him are able to compete in their chosen sport.
I ask family and friends to get behind Lyndon and sign this petition and to share within their networks encouraging as many as we can to sign.
Let's help this little man realise dreams.
