The issue

One NZ (formerly Vodafone NZ) has”upgraded” its cell phone tower, situated on the Coastal Pathway on Beachville Road in Redcliffs, and downgraded the whole Bay.

The tower is substantially larger and more obtrusive than the existing structure, and will dominate views along the pathway and the surrounding area - from Fisherman’s Point to Rapanui (Shag Rock) including the Southshore Spit. This scenic coastal environment is a jewel in Christchurch’s crown and needs our protection.

We don’t believe this is an appropriate location for this piece of infrastructure and ask that One NZ investigates alternatives for its tower site - that won’t impede the views and surrounding vistas for locals and visitors enjoying the Coastal Pathway.

We believe private companies operating on public land need to show sensitivity to local environments and history and practice good stewardship with respect for people living and visiting the area.
