Thank you Matt S. for the great update and letter to the editor regarding the proposed Johnson Drive rezoning and Costco. See below. I wanted to send an update on the Johnson Drive EDZ project and Costco. The joint City Council/Planning Commission workshop on the project has been delayed until April 12th. Please put this on your calendar and plan on attending. A huge turnout will be critical to prevent this project from becoming a slam dunk! City staff says the delay is the result of completing the Economic Study for the project, but it could also be due the fact that the Council is already under fire for the Lund Ranch II project which will now likely go to the voters as a result of the successful referendum drive by opponents to the project and advocates to protect Measure PP, our hillside and ridge protections (enough signatures were submitted to qualify the referendum for the ballot but it still needs to be certified by the Alameda County registrar of voters). City Councils don’t like too much public uproar, so they may be waiting for things to calm down a bit to start the Costco hearings. Also, please consider attending City Council meetings between now and the April 12th workshop and speak during Meeting Open to the Public about your opposition. A few people have been doing this, but City Council’s tend to disregard comments from the same people who speak over and over. We need to let the Council know that there is broad public opposition to the project and that it’s not limited to a few individuals. Finally, you may have seen that Mayor Thorne has already expressed his support for the Johnson Drive EDZ and Costco, and has made it one of his re-election priorities (yes, it’s still 10 months before the election and the project has yet to have a single public hearing before the Council, but he’s already made up his mind!). To me, this is a slap in the face to the public and demonstrates that Thorne cares only about his business and developer benefactors and nothing about you and me. I submitted a letter to the editor about this which is published in today’s Pleasanton Weekly which you might want to read. http://www.pleasantonweekly.com/print/story/2016/02/19/letters I would urge you to contact Mayor Thorne and the rest of the Council if you’re as outraged as I am about this at citycouncil@cityofpleasanton.gov Thorne has made this an election-year issue by his early announcement. It is up to us to demand that our representatives support their constituents rather than big developers and corporations that want to extract profits from the community at our expense - if they want our vote!
