Plant-based skies

Plant-based skies
The Issue
I just got off an airplane. Watched a movie. Took a nap. Enjoyed the in-flight service. And spent some time reminiscing about how both passengers and airlines could contribute to a more sustainable transportation experience these days. Sure, everyone heard terms and promising phrases like “fuel efficiency” or “less single use plastic items” and "greenest airline" - but I’m curious as to why airlines across the board do not simply consider the option to offer only plant-based meal options?
It’s 2024 - we’ve all seen movies like “What the Health” or “Forks over Knives” which address the negative impact animal fats and proteins have on our bodies and systems. We’ve all (hopefully) done our fair research as to why Mother Earth is suffering and what global warming means for our - and especially our future generations. Further, we are all aware that animal agriculture is one of the leading causes for the destruction of the planet and seriously contributes to the carbon footprint of humankind. With approximately one billion (!) meals being served on commercial airplanes worldwide every single year - what easier step to move towards “greener air traffic” is there? What kind of harm comes from a dedicated switch to plant-based meals on board of all aircrafts?
Besides a positive impact on the planet and the lives of tens of thousands of animals, airlines would also directly contribute to the health and well-being of their passengers. What better feeling than to eat (and drink) healthier on a 16-hour flight? Allergens, dietary restrictions and preferences can still easily be accommodated - now even easier than when transporting and serving lactose, eggs, dairy etc. Further, the risk of contracting food poisoning on board would decrease while maintaining proper refrigeration for most food items during travel would surely be easier without any meat, dairy or other animal-derived products on board. A win-win scenario? More like a win-win-win, no?
I am well aware that I’m not the only or the first person to think of suggest this - yet I am wondering why established carriers such as Delta, United, KLM, Singapore Airlines or Lufthansa do not consider this easy, convenient, cost-saving and effective adjustment? Are they worried about a potential push back from passengers who “demand” their chicken or "real" yoghurt? Well - most of them likely would not even notice if a dinner roll suddenly does not contain any milk or eggs anymore - or that the pasta option they are about to enjoy is now being served with a yummy, healthier and delicious non-dairy cheese alternative. And speaking of pasta: Sooo many dishes like pasta, stews, curries, stir fries etc are vegan by default. No explanation, excuse or justification needed.
At the end of the day, the joke is on the passenger if they feel like they “cannot survive” without consuming meat or dairy while being airborne for a few hours. Please stop pretending, big airline companies. This obvious and quick adjustment does not require a huge budget and helps move the world (or the skies above it) into the right direction. The animals, the planet and your conscience will be grateful.
