Stop the Big Box Takeover of Auburn - Say No to Costco at the DeWitt Center!

Last year, Costco very publicly abandoned their plans to build at the DeWitt Center in North Auburn in the face of opposition from residents and lawsuits rightfully filed against the County by the City of Auburn and a merchant group for trying to bypass the CEQA process and for not fully considering the negative impacts the project would have on our town.
But now the Placer County Supervisors are at it again and have re-entered negotiations with Costco to demolish much of the DeWitt Center and build a massive 148,000 square foot Costco with a 20 pump gas station within a mile or less of the already County approved Walmart Supercenter and Smart & Final Extra.
Auburn is destined to become like Sacramento and Roseville if we don't speak up now and demand that the county supervisors stop forcing big box stores onto the city and residents. This fight is not about whether or not Costco is a good employer or business. This is about the dramatic over-development of North Auburn with no viable plan to mitigate the already terrible traffic that will be made worse if a Costco is allowed to join the already County approved Walmart Supercenter and Smart & Final Extra near the DeWitt Center.
Traffic nightmare. The massive Costco and 20 pump gas station will generate thousands of new daily traffic trips on already over-congested local streets, resulting in gridlock and unbearable commute times. Add the already County approved Walmart Supercenter and newly built Smart & Final Extra to the mix and you have the recipe for an absolute traffic gridlock disaster in Auburn!
Costco is already being a bad neighbor. Costco refused to give up a mere 42 overflow parking spaces that could allow for the historic Dewitt Theater to stay open for years to come simply because it interferes with their big box cookie cutter design. Costco also left seniors and taxpayers holding the bag when it abandoned its original plans and failed to pay for paltry 50% it had promised to help relocate the Senior Center which has since been relocated at taxpayers' expense.
Corporate Welfare. Negotiations with Costco call for taxpayers to subsidize the building of their proposed big box store including leasing the County owned land at DeWitt Center to Costco at below market rate for 10 years; giving Costco $1 million in rent credits to offset improvement costs to the site and another rent credit to demolish the senior center, theater and other buildings; and traffic mitigation measures likely falling to taxpayers to pick up the check. Realistically the county won’t even break even with the lease fees for at least 8 years once all of the credits and below market rate lease is accounted for.
Join with your neighbors, residents and merchants in signing this petition and letting the Placer County Supervisors know that enough is enough. We demand and deserve a long term vision from the county that ensures that Auburn remains strong and unique; not a short-sighted and greed infused plan to turn Auburn into a big box strip mall!
