Pixar: bring back the scrapped emotion shame for inside out 3!
The Issue
There are many Inside Out fans who are saddened that the scrapped emotion Shame did not appear in Inside Out 2. Fans believe this emotion would have been really cool and interesting to see, and we think she could still be brought back for a possible Inside Out 3.
Inside Out 2's director has said that the emotion "Shame" was scrapped because she would have been "too heavy for audiences." Many Inside Out and Disney fans find this reasoning ironic, considering that most Pixar and Disney films (such as Toy Story, The Lion King, Up, and many others) tackle heavy topics that have left viewers emotional, Uneasy or upset. While we don’t know exactly what Pixar had planned for Shame’s characterization and writing, the studio could easily adjust her personality and story role so she isn’t too heavy for audiences.
A possible storyline for Inside Out 3 could involve Riley feeling shame about something — perhaps not getting her crush’s attention or embarrassing herself in front of someone important she wants to be loved by. This could cause Shame (and maybe other emotions like Pride) to emerge from Nostalgia’s living space. They might argue with Anxiety for not letting them out sooner, eventually leading to them taking over Headquarters (similar to what Anxiety did in Inside Out 2). In the end, the positive emotions would prove stronger than Shame, helping Riley learn to love and accept herself — defeating or negotiating with Shame in the process.
The moral of the film could be that shame helps you improve yourself and learn from your mistakes. Like every emotion, too much shame is unhealthy, but it is still important. All our emotions matter — that’s why we have them. Shame is just as necessary as the others. Just as the first movie taught us we need Sadness to help us through tough situations, and the second showed us we need Anxiety (but must keep it under control), Inside Out 3 could show that shame also has an important role to play. There is so much potential with this character — she would make a fascinating addition to the Inside Out universe.
