With limited, mostly word-of-mouth "PR", we have over 400 signatures. Being an Internet-accessible petition, some are out of state (but sympathetic to the cause), but most are from the Mendhams, and more coming. To quote an (ahem) historical line: "We have only just begun to fight!" The town still thinks that selling part or all of the municipal land on the site (NOT from the open space part of the site) is a responsible and good solution, but many of us believe that it is wrong financially and wrong historically. Efforts continue to show the town that using Pitney may make help the numbers nice-nice now but at the loss of a great site for future facilities, which was why the town purchased it, and that need is the same or greater now, and also at the loss of historic features that are of irreplaceable value to our town and the area. No known studies or data support the sudden change to not needing new facilities now or in the foreseeable future. Financially, the money already paid out for over 5-years will likely be lost and siting any future facilities will cost more, if another location can even be found. Many professional planners have commented that it makes no sense to sell, it's a bargain to keep. And many are upset by the unprecedented, complete lack of care about the historic features, which could feasibly be saved if recommendations for non-town funding and proper direction were followed. When and how to formally deliver this petition to the Township Committee remain TBD. Your continued support and spreading the word is appreciated!
