The Issue

Imagine stepping out of your home with a sense of serenity, knowing your street is a safe haven for your children to play with sidewalks for your neighbors to walk,  a bike lane for people to exercise and for our community to gather. Unfortunately, this dream feels distant as speeding vehicles race past our homes, killing our pets who lived free, creating an unsafe environment for all. This issue has only been compounded by recent road work requiring large volume reroutes.

Living on a street where the speed limit is currently set between 30 to 35 mph, I have witnessed close calls and heard concerns from both local residents and visitors to our neighborhood. It's not just a concern for a handful of families; it's an issue that affects all of us who live here, work here, or simply pass through.

Reducing the speed limit to 25 mph isn't just a number change—it’s a shift towards prioritizing safety over speed. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that pedestrian fatalities increase dramatically when vehicles are traveling faster than 25 mph. At lower speeds, drivers have more reaction time, can stop quicker, and the impact of potential accidents is less severe.

Furthermore, a slower speed limit is recognized as a proven method to decrease noise pollution and improve the quality of life for all residents. It also encourages more community engagement, as people feel more comfortable using footpaths and cycling lanes without fear.

We call on the local council to take this necessary step in changing our residential speed limit to enhance public safety, protect our community’s wellbeing, and preserve the peace and quiet our neighborhoods deserve. With community support, we can create safer roads and a stronger community spirit.

Join me in advocating for change and making our streets safer for everyone. Sign this petition to encourage our local authorities to act now and lower the speed limit to 25 mph on Pierpont Blvd and Pennisula St. Your support is crucial in bringing our voices together for a safer, more secure environment for our loved ones and future generations.
