Phone-Free Policy for GPS

Phone-Free Policy for GPS
The Issue
We, the undersigned parents and guardians of students in the Greenwich Public Schools, urge the Board of Education to adopt a phone-free policy for our schools. Following the positive examples set by other districts such as Los Angeles Unified School District, Dublin City Schools in Ohio, the State of Indiana and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina, and many others contemplating a similar move, including New York City, Wilton, CT, South Carolina and Massachusetts, we believe that such a policy will significantly benefit our students' educational experience.
Reasons for a Phone-Free Policy:
- Improved Focus and Engagement: Research and practical application have shown that limiting cell phone use during school hours increases student engagement in academic and social activities. Schools that have implemented phone-free policies report more interactive and engaged classrooms, fostering a better learning environment.
- Enhanced Social Interaction: Banning cell phones encourages students to interact face-to-face, developing essential social skills. Districts like Dublin City Schools have observed students communicating more with their peers and forming stronger relationships when not distracted by their devices.
- Reduction in Behavioral Issues: Schools that have adopted phone-free policies have seen a decrease in disciplinary issues related to cell phone use, including cyberbullying and cheating. This creates a safer and more respectful school atmosphere.
- Focus on Safety: While some parents worry about the need for cell phones in emergencies, districts with phone-free policies ensure that students have access to emergency communication through school channels, reducing the risk of system overloads during crises.
We believe that the current “not during class” practice is not enough and implementing a phone-free policy (“bell to bell”) will enhance the educational experience for all students in Greenwich Public Schools. We respectfully request that the Board of Education take this step towards improving our children's learning environment and overall well-being.
