The Issue
DEMAND JUSTICE FOR JORY PORQUIA!
Jose Reynaldo Porquia, a veteran activist and human rights defender in Iloilo City, Philippines, was killed by suspected state agents on April 30, 2020. Jose Reynaldo also known as Jory, was a tireless defender of the rights of the poor and marginalized sector of the society. At the time of his death, he was a leading figure in community feeding and relief operations launched during the enhanced community quarantine due to COVID19. Two weeks before he felled by 9 bullets, Jory was harassed by officers and intelligence operators of the Philippine National Polices.
Jory spent 40 years of his almost-60 years lifetime amidst the peoples struggle. He was Panays first chairperson of the militant League of Filipino Students established in 1984. He was also a delegate to Bagong Alyansang Makabayans founding assembly in 1985. And in 2004, Jory became the first regional chairperson of Migrante Sectoral Party of Panay.
Not only was he at the forefront of the student protest movements in the 80s, he was also a regular figure in workers’ and peasant struggles. He was with the peasant leader Tay Valer Caro and labor-lawyer Atty. Santisteban during the 1985 Lakbayan, which saw the convergence of 35,000, mostly farmers, from the southern, central and eastern towns of Panay.
Jory's murder in the midst of the peoples suffering and uncertainties brought by the pandemic and the Philippine governments militarist response have only fueled further the peoples just fury at this regimes lack of empathy for the people.
His family and colleagues, and the communities Jory served, demand:
- An impartial and independent investigation must be conducted and the perpetrators brought to justice.
- That the worsening impunity in the country be put to an end.
- That the harassments, surveillance, and intimidation to activists such as Jory Porquia be stopped.
- Ensure the rights of the activists such as Jory who are at the forefront in upholding and protecting the people’s rights.
- And that justice to all victims of extrajudicial killings may be served.
