Accokeek, Maryland, (December 19, 2021) – On Friday, I expressed my disappointment and disgust with how Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) were closed. Please do not be deceived – I agree with closing the schools for the health and safety of students, educators, and staff. I only disagree with the sporadic announcement and clumsy closing.
Comments by Governor Larry Hogan on Fox News Sunday this morning that specifically targeted my home – OUR home, Prince George’s County, were deplorable. Apparently, the hack of the Maryland Department of Health skewed the data on the number of COVID cases in Prince George’s County. He made no mention of the educators who are hospitalized and fighting for their lives right now. Downplaying the severity of COVID in Prince George’s County to justify criticism of PGCPS returning to virtual learning for a few days before and after winter break, was despicable and poor leadership. I invite Governor Hogan to visit Prince Georgians who are recovering from COVID, suffering from long-haul COVID, or mourning the loss of loved ones because of this horrible virus.
Additionally, Montgomery and Charles Counties adjusted their in-person learning because of the increase in COVID cases. Why didn’t the Governor mention their changes? Are our neighboring counties wrong for reinstituting virtual learning too? The Governor’s public comments lend to the appearance of inequity in Maryland.
I applaud PGCPS for making our children a priority in the face of the spike in COVID transmissions, despite the poor planning. Now, let’s see if the Governor will sacrifice some of his $2.5 billion surplus to help Prince George’s County renovate and upgrade its school facilities. Better HVAC, improved water quality, and a healthier school environment will help our children close the learning and achievement gap. All Marylanders are facing the same enemy in COVID-19. Our children are not political pawns, and it is time for the racism in politics to stop!
