For too long, the community has been led to believe that free microchipping services are limited to special events or specific "giveaway" quotas. This is a dangerous misconception. As a former insider with years of experience at Animal Services, I have witnessed firsthand that microchips are available to the public 365 days a year at the Fred Wilson location. By failing to disclose the permanent availability of these resources, the city is creating unnecessary barriers to pet reunification. When the public is misinformed about the availability of chips, they may delay or forgo this critical safety measure, leading to higher shelter intake and lower return-to-owner rates. Our Demands We call on the City to immediately implement the following measures to ensure pet safety and administrative accountability: • Mandate Year-Round Free Microchipping: Formally codify that microchipping services remain free and accessible to all residents every day of the year at designated city locations. • End "Limited Availability" Misinformation: Stop the practice of promoting microchips as "limited" or "event-only" resources when permanent stock is available. • Real-Time Resource Transparency: Update all city websites and social media platforms with a live, accurate dashboard of available services, location hours, and appointment links. • Public Accountability: The community deserves the truth about where their tax dollars are going and which life-saving resources are sitting on shelves rather than being utilized by the public. Why This Matters Transparency isn't just a buzzword; it’s a tool for public health and animal welfare. A pet with a microchip is significantly more likely to return home, yet many families wait for "events" because they are unaware that the service is always available. We demand that the city stop gatekeeping these resources and start prioritizing clear, honest communication with the people it serves.
