Stop selling starter hutches and sell a hutch for life.

Many owners do not upgrade from a starter hutch causing misery and behavioral problems in many small animals. Because their rabbit/ guinea pig will reach an adult size within 6 months of being sold a starter hutch the hutch is no longer suitable. A starter hutch should be discontinued and proper advice given on hutch size and care. Why should we care? http://youtu.be/z1Rg7P8lBTs Because their welfare is our responsibility!

Stop selling starter hutches and sell a hutch for life.

Many owners do not upgrade from a starter hutch causing misery and behavioral problems in many small animals. Because their rabbit/ guinea pigs will reach an adult size within 6 months of being sold a starter hutch the hutch is no longer suitable.

The hutches sold do not meet RSPCA minimum cage guidelines for guinea pigs and rabbits and therefore should not be sold from your store.

By selling starter set ups you also encourage impulse buying by providing small, cheap, sub standard and below RSPCA recommendation accommodation.

You also encourage buying guinea pigs in 3's by offering a discount. When a customer buys 3 males and places them in one of your starter hutch set ups it can only lead to disaster, I am sure if you were to check with your adoption/ returns service these are the main pets being returned to your store.

Because of starter hutches many pets end up at homing centers or are taken back to your store because of the behavioral issues providing little space causes. We feel you are causing avoidable stress/ injuries and re-homing by giving out this incorrect advice. You should be promoting responsible pet welfare and this is not the case when selling a hutch that may only be suitable for 1 month, these animals can spend most of their time in the hutch so you should be insuring that the hutch sold is of a suitable size.

A starter hutch should be discontinued and proper advice given on hutch size and care. Promoting responsible pet ownership.
