We have now submitted our petition to the Legal and Democratic Services department at Surrey County Council and we have been advised that the issue of speeding on Cottimore Lane is to be discussed at a Cabinet Member Decision meeting on Tuesday 6th June 2023.
Luke Storey has been invited to the meeting and will be given 4 minutes to present the petition to cabinet members and the meeting will be available to watch via a webcast live stream on the Surrey County Council website – details to follow soon.
Our campaign has received support from 254 people, with 180 signatures making it onto the petition, mainly from residents located on or around Cottimore Lane, but also from family, friends and others from all over.
For everyone that helped by campaigning, spreading the word or signing the petition, the Cottimore Lane Road Safety Campaign team really wish to thank you all for your support.
The response we have received has been seriously overwhelming and thoroughly surpassed our expectations. It really means a lot.
A REMINDER OF WHAT WE ARE CAMPAIGNING FOR…
We recently received an email from another concerned resident - please see the excerpt below:
"...On Thursday, as I was walking along Cottimore lane I was asked by an elderly lady, [clinging] to a telephone pole just south of the Nisa supermarket, if I could help her across the road.
Considering the speed of the cars there needs to be a crossing of some sort across the road.
This is not how elderly people should be treated.
It could have been winter and maybe she has had this problem during the colder and wetter months, at which time it would have been very detrimental to her health..."
The above has been relayed to Surrey County Council and Cabinet Member for Highways, Councillor Kevin Deanus to be included within the comments issued alongside the petition.
We have again reached out to Councillor Deanus to reiterate that it cannot be right that people must continue to live like this just because of the average speed of two contentious and compromised speed surveys in contrast to the vast amount of other evidence and concerns raised?...
The residents, especially the more vulnerable in the community, deserve so much better than this and we sincerely hope that Councillor Deanus will do the right thing and use his position as the Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Highways to help them.
'MAJOR PROJECT' OR MAJOR DECEIT?...
By way of an update on the current County Councillor for Walton’s recent Facebook post about the potential / possible plans for Surrey County Councils’ ‘Liveable Neighbourhoods’ / ‘Major Project’, sadly this does not appear to be all it seems…
Despite the campaign and the team not being affilliated with any political party, we have been made aware of some rather bizarre politically motivated disinformation that has been spread about our campaign and a member of the team, which regrettably appears to have been detrimental to the discussions we have had to date with Councillor Rachael Lake.
As a result, it appears that unviable and unacceptable proposals have been suggested as potential options as part of the ‘Liveable Neighbourhoods’ / ‘Major Project’ with the intention that these potential proposals will be met with such objection from the residents that little or no action will be taken on the issue.
The Cottimore Lane Road Safety Campaign has always been and remains non-political.
The issue of speeding on Cottimore Lane should not be misconstrued as a political matter - it is about the safety and wellbeing of everyone within the community.
In light of the above, we sincerely hope that when the petition is being considered by Surrey County Council, they will ‘act and take decisions impartially, fairly and on merit, using the best evidence and without discrimination or bias’.
We are not sharing the details of the correspondence received from Councillor Lake at this time, because we are currently seeking consultation and taking advice on the matter, however there will be a much more comprehensive update to follow soon.
For now, please stay safe, take care, and keep being awesome!
Thank you again.
