Petition to the President of Somalia: Release Sadia Moalim Ali
The Issue
We call on the Government of Somalia and Somalia’s international partners—including the United Nations, European Union, African Union, and donor governments—to press for the immediate release of Sadia Moalim Ali and the protection of freedom of expression.
Sadia Moalim Ali has been detained in Somalia in connection with the peaceful expression of her political views. Her detention has raised serious concerns among human rights advocates, journalists, members of the Somali diaspora, and all those who believe in freedom of expression and democratic participation. The right to express political opinions without fear of arrest or imprisonment is a fundamental human right. A healthy democracy depends on open debate, criticism of government policies, and the ability of citizens to participate freely in public life.
No one should be jailed simply for peacefully expressing their views.
We are deeply concerned that Sadia Moalim Ali’s detention sends a chilling message to citizens, journalists, activists, and political voices across Somalia and beyond. Respect for freedom of expression, due process, and the rule of law is essential to Somalia’s democratic development and international standing.
Our demands
We call on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the Federal Government of Somalia to:
1. Immediately and unconditionally release Sadia Moalim Ali if she is being detained solely for the peaceful expression of her views.
2. Guarantee her safety, dignity, and access to legal representation while any legal proceedings are ongoing.
3. Uphold Somalia’s constitutional and international human rights obligations regarding freedom of expression and political participation.
4. Ensure that no individual is subjected to arbitrary detention for peacefully expressing political opinions.
A message to the international community:
Somalia benefits from significant support from international partners, including governments, multilateral institutions, and humanitarian organizations. We call on the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, donor governments, and all partners of Somalia to publicly and privately urge respect for freedom of expression and the immediate release of Sadia Moalim Ali.
Human rights and democratic freedoms must remain at the heart of international engagement with Somalia.
Call to action
By signing this petition, we stand for freedom of expression, democratic participation, and the principle that no person should be imprisoned for peacefully expressing their political beliefs.
We urge the Somali authorities to release Sadia Moalim Ali and reaffirm their commitment to human rights, justice, and democratic values.
