Petition to the House of Commons: End Backroom Power—Restore Democracy Through By-Election
The Issue
Restore Democracy Through By-Elections and a Confidence Vote....
To the House of Commons in Parliament Assembled:
We, the undersigned citizens of Canada, are not writing out of routine concern—we are writing out of urgency.
Across this country, Canadians are being pushed to the edge:
People are being priced out of housing in their own communities
Food costs are rising beyond what many families can sustain
Homelessness and addiction are visible in our streets at levels that cannot be ignored
Canadians are struggling—and in some cases, dying—without the support they desperately need
At the same time, the federal government continues to commit substantial public funds to international initiatives and external priorities, while many Canadians feel their own basic needs are being left behind.
This is not about whether Canada should engage globally.
It is about whether our government has lost sight of its first responsibility: to its own people.
And while these pressures grow at home, the balance of power in Parliament has been shaped in ways Canadians were never directly given the opportunity to approve.
When Members of Parliament change party alignment—or shift their support in ways that determine who holds power—the voters they were elected by are bypassed.
No vote.
No accountability.
No renewed consent.
When those shifts help sustain the current government’s hold on power, Canadians are left with leadership that continues without clearly reaffirming its mandate from the people.
This is not a minor concern.
This is a crisis of confidence.
Backroom political arrangements cannot replace the ballot box.
Government authority must come from the people—not be maintained without them.
Therefore, we call on Members of Parliament to:
Acknowledge the growing loss of public confidence in both government priorities and democratic legitimacy
Support mandatory by-elections for any Member of Parliament who changes party alignment, ensuring voters—not internal decisions—determine representation
Recognize that failure to require by-elections in these situations has contributed to a serious erosion of trust
Reassess their confidence in the current government immediately, and where that confidence no longer exists, initiate a vote of non-confidence
Allow Canadians to determine the future of this country through a federal election
Canadians are watching their cost of living rise, their communities strain, and their voices fade—while decisions that shape their future are made without their direct input.
This is not sustainable.
This is not accountable.
And this is not what Canadians expect from a functioning democracy.
If the government believes it still holds the confidence of Canadians, it should prove it—not through internal agreements, but through the people.
Through by-elections.
Through accountability.
Through a general election, if necessary.
Our future cannot be decided behind closed doors while Canadians struggle in the open.
The time to restore trust is now.

This Is Not What Canadians Voted For
Let’s stop pretending everything is normal—because it isn’t.
Canadians did not vote for what this government has become. Yet here we are, being governed by a majority that was never clearly and directly reaffirmed by the people in its current form.
When elected officials change sides, shift power, and help manufacture a majority without going back to the voters, it doesn’t just “bend” democracy—it breaks trust in it.
This is not accountability. This is not transparency.
This is power being held without being properly re-earned.
And while that happens, Canadians are struggling—really struggling.
Housing is out of reach. Food costs keep climbing. People are working harder and falling further behind. Entire communities feel like they’ve been pushed aside.
This is the reality on the ground.
So the question becomes simple:
Who gave this version of the government its mandate?
Not the people—not like this.
A government that avoids going back to voters when its power structure fundamentally changes is choosing political survival over democratic responsibility.
That’s not leadership. That’s avoidance.
And Canadians are done accepting it.
Our Demand
We are calling on every Member of Parliament—regardless of party—to act in the interest of the country, not their own position.
Trigger a vote of non-confidence.
Let Canadians decide.
Call an election.
If this government truly believes it still has the support of the people, it should have nothing to fear from facing them again.
And if it refuses?
Canadians will draw their own conclusions.
