We, the undersigned, stand in support of Tewhan Butler and respectfully request a reevaluation of the current conditions of his ankle monitoring. Tewhan has demonstrated a continued commitment to positive change, community involvement, and violence prevention. His actions since returning home have shown a dedication not only to rebuilding his own life, but also to helping strengthen the lives of others.

During his incarceration, Tewhan became eligible for the First Step Act program, which allowed him the opportunity to transition back into society with a two-year ankle monitoring requirement. Under the rules and regulations of this program, individuals are eligible to earn 15 days of good time credit per month by remaining infraction-free. Since his release, Tewhan has maintained a clean record, followed the requirements placed upon him, and continued to demonstrate accountability. On September 3rd, he will reach one full year since his release from federal prison, marking a significant milestone in his journey of rehabilitation and community service.

Since returning home, Tewhan has made every effort to be a productive and positive force in his community. He is currently working two jobs, serves as a caretaker for his mother, and continues to dedicate his time toward creating safer communities and reducing violence. He has used his experiences to encourage others, speaking at Rutgers University, through the I Matter 2 platform, and at Stop the Violence rallies throughout New Jersey, where he has advocated for peace, accountability, and community unity.

Tewhan Butler has played a pivotal role in promoting peace and reducing conflict in our neighborhoods. His commitment to mentoring youth, encouraging positive choices, and creating opportunities for dialogue has made a meaningful impact. Rather than restricting someone actively working to improve the community, we believe individuals like Tewhan should be supported and empowered to continue their efforts.

We fully understand the importance of public safety and accountability. However, we believe that after nearly one year of compliance, employment, family responsibility, and community engagement, it is appropriate to reconsider the current restrictions placed upon him. The limitations of the ankle monitor restrict his ability to fully participate in community efforts, attend events, and continue the work that benefits so many people.

We respectfully request that the appropriate authorities consider either removing the ankle monitor requirement or reducing the restrictive conditions and allowed monitoring days to provide Tewhan with the flexibility needed to continue his employment, family responsibilities, and community service.
