Petition to Support Fair Treatment for FUHSD Teachers
The Issue
To Fremont Union High School District Students, Staff, and Parents:
Katie Collins, a math teacher at Monta Vista High School, has dealt with chronic health issues since 2014. In spite of her difficulties, her students still perform exceptionally well on the Advanced Placement exams (98% 4/5 in 2026). But most importantly, they learn and grow because Mrs. Collins is a teacher who genuinely cares about her students. She has dedicated many hours outside the classroom to support her students. Even on sick leave, she responds to emails and works with them.
However, her efforts have not been appreciated. For many years, she has raised concerns again and again about inconsistent payroll and sick leave practices, not just for herself, but for other impaired teachers. She has tried seeking assistance through the teachers union, she has contacted California Teachers Association for help, and she has also filed multiple complaints with HR. Her concerns about disability discrimination have been repeatedly ignored and discarded.
Today, we are asking the district administration to honor the compensatory time for writing letters of recommendations. Historically, Mrs. Collins has been granted approval for this time but was denied this year because of issues in attendance records. She brought this problem to attention, but was denied compensation, forcing her to use her sick leave instead.
We believe that Mrs. Collins is treated unfairly, and these practices should not be allowed to perpetuate. She has sacrificed a lot for her students, and continues to teach despite chronic illness. She is the type of person who will listen to your struggles and give you advice on how to move forward, whether it is school related or not. She has done so much for her students, and it’s time for us to take action for her.
Supporting someone who consistently goes above and beyond will not just only benefit her, but also ultimately help her students. We hope the district will resolve this matter fairly and show commitment to treating teachers with the respect that they deserve.

Restore compensatory time that was previously approved
Ensure her sick leave records are corrected
Continue the district's practice of recognizing the substantial time spent writing letters of recommendation
