Petition to Stop the Abolishment of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

Petition to Stop the Abolishment of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of Texas and concerned citizens, strongly oppose the proposed legislation to abolish the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), as introduced by Representative Pat Curry in House Bill 4938. This bill poses a direct threat to the conservation, preservation, and responsible management of our state’s natural resources.
Since its establishment, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has played a vital role in protecting Texas’ public lands, state parks, wildlife, fisheries, and outdoor recreation programs. TPWD ensures access to clean, safe, and well-maintained outdoor spaces for millions of Texans and visitors each year. Its programs support biodiversity, promote environmental education, and sustain local economies through tourism and recreational opportunities.
Eliminating the department would disrupt critical services including wildlife conservation, law enforcement in rural and natural areas, land stewardship programs, and the maintenance of state parks and trails. This move would also harm the state’s reputation for environmental leadership and diminish the quality of life for future generations.
We believe Texas should be investing more—not less—in the stewardship of our natural heritage. The TPWD is not just a department; it’s a legacy of conservation, community engagement, and pride in our great state’s landscapes.
We call on the Texas House of Representatives to reject HB 4938 and protect the future of Texas’ natural resources by preserving and strengthening the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Protect Texas. Preserve Nature. Oppose HB 4938.
