First off I just want to say a huge thank you to all that have signed the petition and shared on it on social media! This effort has not been a waste because Mike Tusken (Chief of Police) has posted to the petition and it's already gathering attention with the city council. I urge you all to stay tuned for more information as it flows as SA is planning on setting up a time with the police department to discuss the issues laid out in the petition as well as all of the wonderful comments showing how the students are being affected by the timing of this policy. The police chief's response is a good sign, but it seemed to create more questions that it did answers, but it did include a note that fines will not be given today, only notifications. That's also a good sign, but then when are they going to start handing out tickets? These are details that the students and surrounding community need to know.
We've also made contact with the Landlord Association President Barbara Montee and she's given us great insight from the landlord's perspective and she agreed with the students that June 1st, 2017 is a much better time to implement this policy, rather than in the middle of a semester nearing the start of winter.
This is just a simple update on how the issue has progressed since this petition was created, but please know that Student Association is not giving up on this issue, we will continue to bring these concerns to the City of Duluth. However, we cannot do it alone, so please keep talking about this and keep it going on everybody's timelines! We've reached nearly 1000 signatures in only two days!
If you feel passionately about this issue and want to be involved more (SA is planning some respectful and peaceful protest ideas) please join a Facebook page that has been created so that we can organize students and concerned citizens to make action about this drastic policy.
P.S. Just so we're all clear, we're advocating that the implementation of this policy is what is the issue and that the enforcement should be stayed until at least June 1st, 2017. We've heard good reason for the law itself, just how the Police Chief pointed out, however the fact that the city was not transparent about the enforcement and that it is particularly targeting students is disturbing. We've voiced much more than reasonable concerns about how this negatively affecting our neighborhoods and we are insisting that we be listened to and not passed over by the city! https://www.facebook.com/groups/535199493356210/ (FB group page)
