Petition to Save the Alexandra Bridge
The Issue
Dear Concerned Citizens,
The Alexandra Bridge, an iconic and emblematic infrastructure spanning the Ottawa River between Ottawa and Gatineau, faces an uncertain future. In 2019, the federal government announced its intention to demolish this historic bridge, a decision that has raised concerns among heritage advocates, local communities, and environmentalists.
The Urgency of Preservation
The Alexandra Bridge, with its rich history dating back to 1901, stands as a testament to Canadian engineering ingenuity. However, the bridge’s deteriorating condition has prompted discussions about its fate. Unfortunately, the decision to demolish the bridge was made hastily, without comprehensive studies on its heritage value or ecological impacts to the area. The federal government is in the midst of consultation with community groups, but has refused to consider restoration or adaptive reuse.
Our Call to Action
We, the undersigned, join forces with organizations on both sides of the Outaouais to advocate for the preservation of the Alexandra Bridge.
We urge Public Services & Procurement Canada (PSPC) and the National Capital Commission to commit to the following:
• Reconsider the Demolition Decision: Let’s pause and reevaluate the rush to demolish this historic structure. A thorough public consultation is essential to understand the bridge’s significance and explore alternatives.
• Ecological Transport Infrastructure: Instead of demolition, let’s envision a future where the Alexandra Bridge serves as an ecological transport link. Imagine a bridge transformed for pedestrians, cyclists, and sustainable transit—a symbol of our commitment to heritage and environmental stewardship.
