This plan poses significant concerns for thousands of travelers who rely on this route for personal, business, and cultural experiences. This direct connection is more than just a convenience; it is a key link that supports the economy, strengthens business ties, and nurtures cultural connections between South Korea and Hawaii.

Hawaiian Airlines HNL-ICN direct service has been an essential bridge between two communities. For nearly 15 years, it has connected families, friends, and loved ones, supported tourism, and provided affordable and direct access between Hawaii and Korea. Ending this service will have serious consequences. 

• Korean visitors as well as visitors from China, Taiwan, and several other countries who opt to transfer thru Incheon and arrive in Hawaii will lose the most competitive and convenient option to one of the world’s most desired honeymoon spot and travel destination. For example, visitors from China in particular have been a big target market at Hawaiian Airlines but they will not fly from China to Incheon then to Seattle to arrive to Honolulu on Hawaiian Airlines and would rather choose different Airlines to arrive to Honolulu if direct service from Incheon to Honolulu discontinued, ultimately Hawaiian Airlines losing customers to competitors. 

• Hawaii residents with family and friends in South Korea will face isolation and be forced to rely on more expensive, less convenient flights.

• In a long run, cultural exchange and tourism between Hawaii and Korea and local workers benefited by it will suffer, impacting businesses and communities who rely on this important connection. 

As such, Alaska Airlines' decision threatens to disrupt the lives of many individuals and families. This route not only facilitates tourism but is essential for students, professionals, and families who have maintained relationships across the Pacific. It plays a crucial role in fostering vibrant cultural and economic exchanges, contributing to the tourism revenue, which is a significant part of Hawaii’s economy.

Statistics reveal a steady increase in travel demand between South Korea and Hawaii. According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, South Korean visitors spent more than USD 497 million in Hawaii in 2019, supporting over 5,000 jobs. After the pandemic, it has been slowly recovering and number of travelers and spending have been re-rising. Such expenditures underline the economic importance of maintaining direct air travel options from key markets like South Korea. 

While Alaska Airlines has cited profitability concerns, we believe this decision fails to reflect the long-term value, loyalty, and importance of this route. The Honolulu–Incheon service has a unique role that cannot be measured by short-term financial gains or losses alone.

The convenience of direct flights between HNL and ICN - served by Hawaiian Airlines with competitive airfare price - reduces travel time and provides a seamless experience for travelers with true Aloha spirit of Hawaii. Without this service, passengers who fly Hawaiian's direct flight between HNL-ICN will face longer travel times and layovers, potentially deterring tourists and inconveniencing regular flyers. Ultimately it will result in Hawaiian/Alaska losing customers and doing the better for other competitor Airlines that carry travelers between South Korea and Hawaii. It is evidently critical to consider the broader impact on the communities on both sides of the Pacific that depend on this service for so many years. 

We urge Alaska Airlines to reconsider its plan to suspend the direct service between Incheon and Honolulu. Maintaining this route would continue to bolster economic relations and support the livelihood of those who have been relying heavily on this connection for many many years. In the interest of enhancing and sustaining essential transportation links, reconsideration of this suspension is paramount. If must, we urge Alaska Airlines to explore alternatives—such as seasonal adjustments or improved marketing—rather than eliminating the route entirely.

우선, 항공사 당국의 과학적 승산이 중요한 상황, 단일 항공편의 중단은 공통된 시기적 요인과 함께 봐야 한다. 하와이안 항공은 2011년부터 이 노선을 운영했으며, 팬데믹 이전까지는 안정적으로 수익을 창출해 왔다. 그러나 올해 실행된 알래스카 항공의 인수합병 이후 변화되는 과정에서 인천-호놀룰루 노선은 비용 구조와 네트워크 전략 측면에서 새로 출항 할 인천-시애틀 노선 뒤로 밀린 것으로 판단된다.  

로컬 주민과 HNL(호놀룰루 국제공항)을 사용하는 지역 사회는 큰 타격을 입게 될 것으로 전망된다. 오랫동안 한국과 하와이를 항공사 직항편이 사라지면서 지역주민뿐만 아니라 한국을 비롯한 수많은 아시아권 나라 여행객에게도 선택권이 줄어들었기 때문이다. 특히 하와이의 한인 사회는 가족 방문, 유학, 비즈니스 등 다양한 목적으로 이 노선을 이용해 왔다. 또한 관광객 입장에서도 한국은 하와이로 가는 가장 커다란 동북아시아 출발지 중 하나였다. 최근 들어 중국, 일본 노선이 줄어든 상황에서 한국 노선마저 단절되면 하와이 시장 다변화 전략은 심각한 균열을 맞이할 수밖에 없다. 

더욱이 한국에서 하와이로 가는 경로는 직항이 사라지면 경유가 불가피하다. 대부분 일본, 미국 본토를 경유해야 하기 때문에 시간과 비용 부담이 커진다. 현재 대한항공, 아시아나, 에어프레미아(성수기 한정 운영)가 직항편을 운영하고 있으나, 성수기뿐 아니라 비수기때에도 공급 좌석이 충분치 않아 탑승객 수요를 충족시키기에는 한계가 뚜렷하다. 이로 인해 항공권 가격이 급격히 오를 가능성도 배제할 수 없다. 소비자 선택권 축소와 가격 상승이라는 이중 부담이 우려되는 대목이다. 

통계에 따르면, 두 나라 간 인적·문화적 교류는 지속적으로 증가하고 있었다. 특히 한국인 관광객은 2019년 하와이를 방문한 외국인 관광객의 2위(일본 다음)를 차지했다. 그만큼 안정적 수요가 존재하는 노선이라는 의미다.
따라서 이번 결정은 단순히 수익성 문제를 넘어 정치적, 경영적 이해관계가 개입했을 가능성이 높다는 게 업계의 시각이다. 호놀룰루(HNL)와 인천(ICN) 사이의 직항편은 미-한 양국 관계 속에서 경제적·문화적 가교 역할 또한 해왔다. 이 항로가 끊기는 것은 상징성과 경제성을 동시에 잃는 것이라는 평가다. 

지역 항공 전문가들은 “알래스카 항공이 하와이안 항공을 인수한 이후, ICN 직항 노선은 전략상 우선순위에서 밀려났다”며 “이는 단순한 수익성 관리나 노선 정리 차원을 넘어 미주-아시아 항공 네트워크 재편에도 크게 영향을 미친다”고 지적했다. 

특히 알래스카 항공은 미국 서부 본토에 강점을 둔 항공사로, 태평양 장거리 노선에는 상대적으로 관심이 적었던 것이 사실이다.  

이노윤(서울시립대 교수)은 “한국과 하와이 간의 항공 노선 단절은 단순한 교통 문제가 아니다. 이는 곧 관광산업, 유학생 이동, 가족 방문, 문화 교류 등 사회 전반에 걸쳐 큰 파장을 일으킨다”며 “항공사가 단기 수익성만을 기준으로 전략을 짜는 것은 바람직하지 않다”고 강조했다. 

그는 또한 “해당 항로는 관광·산업·사회적 차원의 의미가 크다”며 “정부와 지자체가 협력하여 외교적, 정책적 노력을 기울일 필요가 있다”고 조언했다.

이 청원서는 알라스카항공에 인천-호놀룰루 직항 노선 중단 계획을 재고해 주길 촉구하며 대신, 계절별 편수조정이나 마케팅 개선과 같은 대안을 탐색해 주길 요하는 바이다.
