Petition to Review and Reform Tzu Chi School PIK’s Hair Policy
Masalahnya
We, the undersigned students of Tzu Chi School PIK, wish to express our growing concern regarding the recent enforcement of the school’s hair policy. While we understand and respect the intent to maintain discipline and uphold the school’s values, the current approach has caused unnecessary stress, discomfort, and confusion among students.
Since yesterday, more than half of the Grade 12 cohort (approximately 90–100 students) were called out for hair-related issues and were forcibly required to fix their hair using gels and clips provided by the shigu(s). In several cases, students were pressured to sign written pledges to cut their hair by certain dates. This sudden and strict enforcement without prior warning or transitional notice has disrupted our learning environment and created a lot of distrust between students and staff.
Furthermore, inconsistencies in enforcement have been observed. Some students were reprimanded not for hair length, but for the style or texture of their hair. In certain cases, these judgments appeared to be influenced by subjective or culturally biased interpretations of what is considered “acceptable,” with references to traditional or religious values (such as Buddhist hair norms). This has resulted in feelings of unfair treatment and discrimination among students who do not share or identify with these traditions.
We believe that discipline should be guided by respect, clarity, and inclusivity, not sudden fear or public embarrassment. Therefore, we respectfully request that the school:
- Review and clarify the hair policy, ensure that it is clearly defined, culturally neutral, and consistent with the school’s values of respect and justice.
- Suspend punitive enforcement until clearer guidelines are established and communicated to all students.
- Hold a dialogue or open forum between students, teachers, and administrators to discuss how grooming standards can be upheld without compromising individual dignity.
- Ensure equal and fair treatment for all students, regardless of hair type, style, or cultural background.
