1. Immediately Rescind the Motion Prohibiting the Recording of Public Meetings:   On July 2nd, the City Council passed a motion that prohibits citizens from recording public meetings. This action is a direct violation of the Alabama Open Meetings Act, which ensures that all government meetings conducted in the public’s interest remain transparent and accessible to all. The ability to record these meetings is crucial for maintaining an informed citizenry and holding our elected officials accountable.
2. Reaffirm the Right of Citizens to Record Public Meetings:We demand that the City Council formally acknowledge and protect the rights of citizens to record public meetings, as provided by state law and the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Transparency in government is fundamental to democracy, and this right must be upheld without exception.
3. Ensure Accountability for Unlawful Actions:We call for an independent investigation into the actions taken by city officials and law enforcement on [Date of Incident] when a resident was unlawfully removed from a public meeting for attempting to exercise their legal right to record the proceedings. Those responsible must be held accountable for any violations of state law and constitutional rights.
