Petition to Reopen the Manjal Jimalji (Devil’s Thumb) Trail

The issue

The Manjal Jimalji (Devil’s Thumb) trail was originally closed due to damage from Tropical Cyclone Jasper, which has since been repaired. Additionally, the trail crosses through private property at its base, which has further complicated its reopening. I’m starting this petition to demonstrate to the landowners and relevant authorities how deeply this trail is valued by hikers, nature enthusiasts, and the broader community. By showcasing our collective passion, we hope to see this incredible trail reopened—not just for us, but for future generations.

This trail holds a special place in my heart, as it is, in my opinion, one of the best and most unique hikes in North Queensland. It offers an unparalleled experience of diverse and endemic plants and wildlife, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. The journey features:

A stunning coral fern patch and lush cloud forest.
Crystal-clear waterfalls and streams.
Spectacular views of the Daintree Rainforest stretching to the Coral Sea from the iconic “Thumb” rock formation.
In addition to its natural beauty, reopening the trail could provide significant economic benefits to the Mossman community, particularly at a time when the local sugar mill has closed. By attracting hikers, backpackers, and tourists, the trail has the potential to boost local businesses and tourism-related services.

That said, we understand concerns raised about backpackers leaving trash in the parking lot and using the area as an informal toilet. This is something we believe can be addressed by collaboration between local council, the Department of Parks and Wildlife, and the landowners. Additionally, exploring the possibility of cutting a new track to bypass private land could provide a long-term solution to ensure access while respecting property boundaries.

We urge the community to come together and show their support for this incredible trail. Please sign this petition and share your stories about what the Manjal Jimalji trail means to you. Let’s work together to bring this iconic hike back to life for the enjoyment and benefit of all.
