Petition to Remove George Abaraonye as President-Elect of the Oxford Union

The Issue

George Abaraonye, the incoming President of the Oxford Union, made comments mocking the tragic shooting  of American activist Charlie Kirk.

While everyone is entitled to personal views, celebrating or trivialising a human being’s violent death—regardless of political differences—is incompatible with the dignity, responsibility, and values expected of a leader of the Oxford Union.

Mr. Abaraonye’s subsequent statement acknowledging his “impulsive” comments does not erase the harm caused nor restore confidence in his ability to lead the society in good faith.

The Oxford Union has a proud tradition as a place where people of every background and political persuasion can debate the most difficult issues of our time. By appearing to celebrate a political assassination, Mr. Abaraonye’s comments not only undermine that tradition but also risk creating an environment in which students—particularly those who hold conservative views—feel unwelcome or unsafe.

Yes, Mr. Abaraonye is young — but he is not a child. He is an adult about to assume one of the most prestigious student leadership roles in the world. With that responsibility comes accountability.

Leadership at the Oxford Union is a privilege, not a right. The Union deserves a president who embodies the principles of respect, responsibility, and intellectual integrity.

Words that directly or indirectly endorse violence cross a line that cannot be ignored. To uphold the integrity of this historic institution, we urge the Oxford Union to remove George Abaraonye as President-Elect and to establish clearer standards of conduct for future officers.
