PETITION TO RELOCATE YOGA CLASSES FROM ACTIVE BURIAL AND MEMORIAL AREAS
The Issue
To: Cemetery Administration, Board of Directors, Relevant City Officials, and Residence.
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that yoga classes and similar recreational activities be relocated away from active burial grounds, memorial spaces, and areas where families gather to mourn and honor their loved ones.
While we support health, wellness, and community engagement, many families view cemeteries as sacred spaces dedicated to remembrance, reflection, grief, and respect for those who have passed away. For many visitors, these grounds are not simply public green spaces but places of deep personal significance where they come to connect with and honor family members and friends.
We recognize and appreciate efforts to provide diverse programming within the community. However, diversity and inclusion also require consideration of the perspectives and emotional needs of grieving families and visitors who may find recreational activities in close proximity to gravesites inappropriate or distressing.
We respectfully request that:
Yoga classes be relocated to an alternative location that does not include active burial or memorial areas.
Families should be given an opportunity to provide input regarding future events and programming held on cemetery grounds.
The cemetery establish clear guidelines that prioritize the primary purpose of the cemetery as a place of remembrance and reflection.
Recreational, fitness, and similar activities be reviewed carefully before approval and, for both current and future planning purposes, be held in locations that do not interfere with the peaceful environment expected by grieving families and visitors.
This policy be considered for future reference when evaluating community programming to ensure that the dignity of burial and memorial spaces remains protected.
This petition is not intended to oppose wellness activities or community programming. Rather, it seeks a balanced approach that respects both community interests and the feelings of those who visit the cemetery to honor their loved ones.
By signing below, we express our support for relocating yoga classes away from burial and memorial areas and preserving these spaces for remembrance, reflection, and respect—both now and in the future.
