The Issue

To Mayor Sheinfield, the Borough Council, and the Recreation Committee:

We, the undersigned residents and supporters of Hillsdale, respectfully request the inclusion of dedicated pickleball courts in the final Master Plan for the renovation of Memorial Field.

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in America, with millions of players across all age groups—children, teens, working adults, and seniors. Hillsdale has seen a surge in local interest and participation, reflecting national trends and signaling the need for more permanent, accessible courts within our community.

We believe pickleball courts belong in Memorial Field for the following reasons:
1. A Sport for All Ages
Pickleball offers a rare combination of intergenerational appeal and low-impact exercise, making it ideal for families, young adults, and seniors alike. It’s inclusive, easy to learn, and welcoming to beginners, creating an environment where residents of all ages can play together.

2. Community Building
The sport encourages social connection and civic engagement, which strengthens our town’s sense of community. Unlike solitary exercise, pickleball fosters face-to-face interaction, neighborly bonds, and group activity—qualities that Hillsdale should embrace in its public spaces.

3. Health & Longevity
Pickleball promotes physical activity, which directly supports mental and physical well-being. Studies from the Blue Zones—regions around the world where people live the longest—emphasize regular, natural movement and strong social connections as key contributors to longevity. Pickleball offers both, in a format that is accessible and enjoyable.

4. Responsible & Forward-Thinking Planning
Many towns and cities across the country are rapidly building pickleball infrastructure to meet demand. By planning now for designated courts, Hillsdale can avoid future overuse of multi-purpose areas and noise conflicts, while affirmatively investing in amenities that meet long-term recreational needs.

Our Request:
We urge the Borough to restore dedicated pickleball courts to the Memorial Field Master Plan. Doing so would not only reflect current demand but also demonstrate a commitment to fostering a vibrant, healthy, and connected Hillsdale for years to come.

We thank you for your consideration and your continued service to our community.

Sincerely,
[Signatures of Hillsdale Residents and Supporters]
