Petition to Reinstate Direct Phone Numbers and Extensions for MDHHS Employees
The Issue
I am writing to formally request the reinstatement of direct phone numbers and extensions for employees of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). The current system of contacting employees through a central office, where messages are relayed via email, is inefficient and creates significant challenges for individuals who depend on timely communication regarding their benefits and services.
The primary issues with the current system include:
1. **Delayed Response Times:** Due to heavy workloads and no assistants to help manage the caseload, employees often take longer to respond to inquiries. This delay can have serious consequences, especially when mistakes are made in cases, leaving families without essential benefits.
2. **Lack of Direct Communication:** The inability to reach a worker directly hinders effective communication. Issues that could be resolved quickly with a direct conversation are prolonged due to the intermediary step of message relay.
3. **Uncertainty and Anxiety:** For many individuals and families, the benefits and services provided by MDHHS are crucial. The uncertainty of not knowing when a worker will respond adds unnecessary stress and anxiety to already difficult situations.
In my personal experience, despite attempting to contact workers through the fax, document submission portals, and even district managers, I have found these methods to be largely ineffective. As a parent, I rely on MDHHS resources to support my son and myself until I can secure a stable alternative. The current communication barriers have exacerbated our challenges.
Therefore, I urge MDHHS to consider the following recommendations:
1. **Reinstatement of Direct Phone Numbers and Extensions:** Allowing direct contact will enable more efficient and effective communication between workers and clients, ensuring that issues are addressed promptly.
2. **Increased Support for Employees:** Providing additional support staff or assistants to help manage caseloads can improve response times and reduce the risk of errors in case handling.
3. **Enhanced Communication Channels:** While the portal and fax systems are valuable, ensuring they are fully functional and responsive is essential. Additionally, providing alternative contacts or escalation points for urgent matters can help mitigate the impact of delayed responses.
By implementing these changes, MDHHS can improve the quality of service provided to Michigan residents, ensuring that individuals and families receive the support they need in a timely manner.
Thank you for considering this petition. I look forward to your positive response and am hopeful that these changes will lead to better outcomes for all MDHHS clients.
