Petition to reconsider closure of West Drayton Weekend Waste Service
The Issue
We're asking Hillingdon Council to pause implementation of, and reconsider, the closure of the West Drayton Waste Weekends service.
Hillingdon Council has announced that the West Drayton Waste Weekends service will close from 21 December 2026. We believe implementation of this decision should be paused to allow it to be reconsidered, with meaningful engagement with residents and a full assessment of its impact on local communities, charities and the environment.
I've used the West Drayton Waste Weekends service for years and have seen first-hand how valuable it is to our community. It's far more than a recycling site—it helps reduce waste, promotes reuse and supports local charities. I'm leading this campaign because I believe residents deserve to have their voices heard before this valued community service is lost.
The service provides an accessible local facility relied on by thousands of residents. It helps reduce waste sent to landfill, gives reusable items a second life, and supports charities and community organisations. The Reuse & Recycling Shop has raised almost £100,000 for Harlington Hospice, demonstrating the wider community value of the service beyond waste disposal.
Closing the service would mean longer journeys for many residents, increasing traffic and vehicle emissions, at odds with the Council's own climate and air-quality commitments. It would also make recycling less accessible for older residents, disabled people and those without easy access to transport, while increasing concerns about fly-tipping.
We support improvements to waste services, but changes should not come at the expense of a well-used local facility without transparent evidence, proper consultation and meaningful public engagement.
We are asking Hillingdon Council to:
Pause implementation of the closure.
Reconsider the decision using up-to-date evidence.
Publish the evidence that informed the decision.
Engage meaningfully with residents before implementation.
Resident Survey Results (327 responses over last month)
Before launching this petition we carried out a resident survey to understand the likely impact of the closure. The results show strong community concern:
• 90% said the service is important to their household.
• 80% said closing it would have a major impact.
• 93% support Hillingdon Council reviewing the decision.
• 97% support a resident petition asking the Council to reconsider the closure.
• 96% believe longer journeys would result.
• 93% are concerned about increased fly-tipping.
• 86% are concerned about the loss of fundraising for Harlington Hospice.
• 73% believe the Council's proposed alternatives are not suitable
If you believe this valued community service deserves proper consideration before it closes, please sign and share this petition. Every signature sends a clear message to Hillingdon Council that the West Drayton Waste Weekends service is a valued community asset worth protecting
