Petition to provide for the Electronic Transmission of Votes/Results
- Voter intimidation, multiple voting, ballot snatching/stuffing, outright rigging, falsification of results and other associated electoral malfeasance are characteristics of Nigeria’s elections. By hindering the capacity of Nigerians to choose the leaders they want, and undermining the power of the vote to penalise non-performing politicians electoral manipulation continues to stifle our progress as a nation.
- Fortunately, across the world, advances in technology and telecommunications have solved the technical challenges and we are convinced that it is time Nigeria also embraces 'Electronic Transmission of Votes/Results.
- The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in what is arguably its strongest defence of electronic transmission of election results, says it has developed adequate structures and processes to successfully transmit election results electronically.
- The Senate rejected the electronic transmission of results while the House of Representatives ruled that it should only be done after INEC gets the permission of the National Communication Commission and the National Assembly.
- Both chambers of the National Assembly are set to meet to harmonize their positions before a final amended bill is sent to President Muhammadu Buhari for signing into law.
This petition by #FixPolitics and over 100 independent organisations {click here to see full list}, that have proudly endorsed it is an urgent demand for change. We ask for the Nigerian Government(House of Representative, The Senate and Presidency) to Allow for Electronic Transmission of Results for this is the change we want.
