PETITION TO PROTECT ST. GEORGE ISLAND ZONING AND THE APALACHICOLA BAY
PETITION TO PROTECT ST. GEORGE ISLAND ZONING AND THE APALACHICOLA BAY
The Issue
Are you are aware of Franklin County BOCC's hearings to consider changing the zoning on the SGI overlay? The next BOCC hearing on this is September 23.
St. George Island is a unique barrier-island community with one bridge, limited roads and infrastructure, sensitive coastal resources, and important evacuation and emergency-response challenges. The Island also has a significant economic impact on Franklin County.
The proposed changes to the St. George Island Corridor Overlay District could have significant long-term impacts on the Island, the Apalachicola Bay, and Franklin County.
We respectfully ask the Franklin County Board of County Commissioners to::
● Carefully evaluate proposed zoning changes before approving them.
● Conduct or request appropriate impact studies and make the findings available to the public.
● Evaluate impacts on Apalachicola Bay and the environment, traffic, evacuation, fire/EMS and law enforcement, infrastructure, stormwater, parking, businesses, workers, surrounding properties, and quality of life.
● Listen to the community and consider the long-term interests of St. George Island and Franklin County.
We support responsible growth, but believe development should be balanced with the safety, infrastructure, environment, character, and long-term sustainability of St. George Island and the Apalachicola Bay.
