Dear Supporters,
We have received some promising news in response to our collective efforts. SB1 by Senator Creighton will be amended on the floor to ensure that prekindergarten students are included in the school choice program when it passes. This is a significant step forward in our mission to protect our beloved childcare industry.
While the bill extends school choice to all Texas Public School students, the number who may actually be served is limited by the appropriation amount of $500,000,000 for the biennium. The bill allocates $8,000 per student meaning that approximately 30,000 children may be served in the first biennium.
The available spaces are prioritized to be awarded to children with learning differences and low income families first, meaning that approximately 30,000 of the 3,200,000 children on free and reduced lunch status may be served.
While this news is a reason to celebrate, our journey is far from over. We still face challenges that threaten the heart of our childcare and lack full freedom of choice for all families. Therefore, our call to action remains as crucial as ever:
**Unite and Fight:** Now is the time for us to come together even stronger to safeguard our businesses, our livelihoods, and, most importantly, the well-being of our children.
Parents deserve the freedom of school choice, and our children deserve the option of a more intimate and nurturing educational environment.
