Petition to Preserve Wreck Beach's Unique Natural Character.
The Issue
Please disregard the top supporter comment. It seems we've hit a nerve with Metro, and they have attempted to derail our efforts. The videos will be removed shortly
We, the undersigned, call on Metro Vancouver to cease actions that threaten Wreck Beach's unique natural character and to preserve it as a naturalist haven.
Our Key Concerns:
Loss of Natural Features: Metro Vancouver has removed large, protective logs and replaced them with smaller, more dangerous ones, compromising privacy, safety, and comfort. These large logs, which were over 3 feet in width, provided essential barriers against wind, sun, and unwanted onlookers.
Increased Surveillance: The new open sight lines expose beachgoers, reducing privacy for naturalists, families, and those seeking freedom of choice. This increased exposure disrupts the sense of safety and tranquility that Wreck Beach has always offered.
Ecological Impact: Metro Vancouver's actions, such as chainsawing logs and scattering them on the shoreline, disrupt local wildlife, including the spawning cycles of lancer fish. These actions not only harm the environment but also create hazardous conditions for beachgoers.
Lack of Community Engagement: Decisions have been made without genuine consultation with the Wreck Beach community. The unique needs and values of this long-standing, historical community are being ignored, leading to changes that do not reflect the wishes of the people who cherish this beach.
Increased Intimidation: Herds of men in city clothing are coming to the beach, intimidating visitors, and filming women and children. This is directly correlated to the open sight lines and the monitoring metro claims it needs. Metro Vancouver’s response of "trying to educate them" is insufficient. We need more safe spaces and a reduction in voyeuristic behavior. Correcting the mistake of removing the larger logs and safe spaces is a simple and effective answer.
Leadership Concerns: The current leadership’s approach to inclusivity, which includes accommodating these groups, is misguided and dangerous. New leadership that truly values and understands the unique nature of Wreck Beach is needed.
Colonial Approach: The actions of Metro Vancouver reflect a colonial mindset, imposing top-down decisions that disrupt long-standing community practices and cultural values. True leadership should honor the history and autonomy of Wreck Beach, respecting its status as a unique naturalist refuge.
We Demand:
Stop disruptive actions immediately.
Restore large logs (3 feet in width and up) for natural barriers and privacy.
Engage genuinely with the Wreck Beach community.
Implement measures to protect beachgoers' privacy and safety.
Ensure leadership respects and understands Wreck Beach's unique nature.
