Petition to Preserve the Language and Traditions of the Syro-Malabar Community
The Issue
As we approach the 10th anniversary of our eparchy, we are compelled to address a pressing concern regarding the use of language and tradition within the Syro-Malabar community.
Our roots are deeply embedded in Kerala, where Malayalam is not just a language, but a cornerstone of our identity. It is troubling to see some parishes advocating for English services at the expense of our own language and traditions. While incorporating English services on selected days for our children’s understanding of the Syro-Malabar Qurbana could be beneficial, we must question what it means to be a Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in Canada if we abandon our heritage.
We must remember that children from various backgrounds are striving to uphold their languages and cultural values in a new society. If we dilute our heritage, we risk losing our unique identity, similar to what has happened to Latin Churches in Europe and beyond.
While it is true that our children may not fully grasp the Malayalam Holy Mass at first, with parental support, they can learn the prayers and meanings over time. Children are naturally equipped to learn new languages, and it is essential that we nurture this ability.
We urge our community to reflect on the significance of our traditions and promote an environment that values our rich cultural heritage. If we do not take a stand now, we risk losing the essence of what makes the Syro-Malabar Church so special.
Let us come together to preserve our identity and ensure our community thrives while honoring our past. Sign this petition to advocate for the continued use of Malayalam holy mass and the celebration of our Syro-Malabar traditions within our parishes.
Thank you for your consideration.
