The Issue

We, the undersigned members of the public and concerned citizens of Seychelles, respectfully submit this petition to express our strong opposition to the proposed aquaculture project planned in the marine area designated by S.I. 116 of 2024.

This marine zone, which falls within a highly valued and actively used area of Beau Vallon Bay and its surroundings, is critical for tourism, local livelihoods, recreation, and marine biodiversity.

The development of aquaculture infrastructure in this area would significantly alter the natural marine environment, potentially reduce access to the sea for existing users, and pose risks to marine ecosystems and water quality.

We respectfully urge:

1. That the proposed aquaculture project in the area designated by S. I. 116 of 2024 and further described in Marine Notice No. 7 of 2025 be halted immediately.

2. That the designation of this area as an aquaculture zone under the Fisheries (Designation of Aquaculture Zones) Regulations of 2024 be formally reviewed and reconsidered in light of public concern, environmental sensitivities, and alternative locations.

3. That a more inclusive and transparent process be adopted for future decisions regarding the location of aquaculture zones, ensuring active community consultation and independent environmental assessments.

We believe the long-term interests of Seychelles — including sustainable development, community well-being, and marine protection — are best served by careful, inclusive, and science-based decision-making. We respectfully call on the government of Seychelles to listen to the voices of the people and reconsider the use of this marine space.

To:

- His Excellency Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan, President of the Republic of Seychelles.

- Hon. Jean-François Ferrari, Minister for Fisheries and the Blue Economy.

- Dr. Jan Robinson, Chief Executive Officer, Seychelles Fishing Authority.
