To the Government of Canada,

We, the undersigned, call upon the Government of Canada to modernize Canada's fertility laws by allowing regulated compensation for egg and sperm donors.

Thousands of Canadians rely on donated eggs and sperm to build their families, including individuals experiencing infertility, cancer survivors, single parents by choice and LGBTQ+ Canadians.

Despite this need, Canada faces a chronic shortage of domestic donors. As a result, many intended parents are forced to purchase donor sperm imported from other countries or travel abroad for egg donation, significantly increasing the financial and emotional burden of fertility treatment.

Current Canadian law prohibits compensating donors beyond reimbursement for eligible expenses. While well-intentioned, this approach has contributed to a limited domestic donor pool and reduced reproductive options for Canadians.

Many comparable countries, including the United Kingdom and Australia, allow regulated forms of donor compensation while maintaining strong ethical safeguards, informed consent, medical screening and protections against exploitation.

We are not asking for the commercialization of human reproduction.

We are asking for a carefully regulated system that:

• Allows reasonable compensation for the significant time, commitment, discomfort and medical procedures involved in egg and sperm donation
• Maintains rigorous medical, legal and ethical oversight
• Protects donors through informed consent and appropriate health standards
• Expands access to Canadian donors for intended parents
• Reduces reliance on imported donors and travelling to receive treatment
• Supports equitable access to family-building for all Canadians.

We respectfully call upon Parliament to review and amend Canada's fertility legislation to permit fair, transparent, and regulated compensation for egg and sperm donors while maintaining Canada's commitment to ethical reproductive care.

Every Canadian deserves a fair opportunity to build a family.
