PETITION TO MAYOR COURTNEY: RESTORE TRUST AND ACCOUNTABILITY — TERMINATE AARON TIPSWORD

PETITION TO MAYOR COURTNEY: RESTORE TRUST AND ACCOUNTABILITY — TERMINATE AARON TIPSWORD
The Issue
The citizens of Lawrenceville deserve safe, properly managed water and wastewater systems. Unfortunately, recent developments involving the City’s wastewater treatment operations have severely undermined public trust.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) has taken the extraordinary step of seeking to revoke Aaron Tipsword’s wastewater operator certification for three (3) years, citing allegations of gross negligence and/or gross misconduct in the operation of a wastewater treatment facility.
This is not a minor issue. This is not a paperwork error. These are serious allegations tied directly to the safety, compliance, and integrity of a critical public system.
As a result of these failures:
- The City of Lawrenceville has been cited for violations by the IEPA
- The community now faces the potential for significant financial penalties and fines
- Public confidence in the leadership and operation of these systems has been deeply shaken
- State regulators have escalated the matter to the point of potential further enforcement action
Despite all of this, Mayor David Courtney has indicated plans to retain Aaron Tipsword in a position of responsibility over the public water supply.
This is unacceptable.
The same individual now facing serious regulatory action for wastewater operations should not be entrusted with oversight of another critical public utility—especially one that directly impacts the health and safety of every resident.
This is not about politics.
This is about public trust, accountability, and protecting our community.
OUR DEMAND
We, the undersigned citizens of Lawrenceville, respectfully but firmly call on Mayor David Courtney to:
Immediately terminate Aaron Tipsword from his position with the City of Lawrenceville.
ACCOUNTABILITY IN LEADERSHIP
If the Mayor chooses not to take this logical and necessary step to protect the public and restore trust, then it raises serious concerns about leadership and judgment at the highest level of city government.
In that case, we believe the Mayor should step down from his position and allow leadership that will prioritize accountability, transparency, and the well-being of the citizens of Lawrenceville.
WHY THIS MATTERS
- Our water and wastewater systems must be managed with competence and integrity
- Our city must avoid unnecessary fines and legal exposure
- Our residents deserve transparency and accountability
- Our leadership must put the health and safety of the public FIRST
