Petition: Reconsider the 50-Year Mining Moratorium in Palawan – Protect Rio Tuba's Future

For generations, responsible mining has been the bedrock of our community in Rio Tuba. It has provided jobs for our families, funded our schools, and empowered us to build a brighter future.  The proposed 50-year mining moratorium threatens to dismantle everything we've worked so hard to achieve, plunging thousands into uncertainty and jeopardizing the socio-economic progress of our town.  We believe a balanced approach is possible – one that protects our environment while preserving the vital economic contributions of responsible mining.

The Impact of the Moratorium:
The proposed moratorium will have devastating consequences:

- Job Losses: Thousands of families rely on mining for their livelihoods.  An immediate halt will cause widespread unemployment and poverty.

- Loss of Funding for Essential Services: Mining funds our schools, hospitals, and other crucial community services.  The moratorium will severely limit access to these vital resources.

- Stunted Economic Growth: Rio Tuba's economic development is intrinsically linked to mining.  The moratorium will stifle growth and limit opportunities for future generations.

We, the students of Leonides S. Virata Memorial School, stand together in support of responsible mining and the countless benefits it has brought to our community. For years, mining has provided jobs that sustain our families, funded education that empowers us, and uplifted the lives of many in Rio Tuba. Our story is not just our own—it is a testament to the life-changing potential of responsible mining.

A Balanced Approach: Responsible Mining and Environmental Sustainability:

We understand the importance of environmental protection.  We are not advocating for reckless exploitation of our natural resources.  Instead, we urge our lawmakers to support responsible mining practices that prioritize sustainability and environmental stewardship.  This includes:

- Strict adherence to environmental regulations:  Implementing and enforcing rigorous environmental standards to minimize the impact of mining operations.

- Investing in environmental rehabilitation:  Committing resources to restore mined areas and protect biodiversity.

- Community engagement and transparency:  Ensuring open communication and collaboration with local communities to address concerns and promote accountability.

We, the students of Leonides S. Virata Memorial School, respectfully request that the Government reconsider the proposed 50-year moratorium. We urge you to allow responsible mining to continue under strict environmental regulations, ensuring the long-term well-being of our community and the protection of our natural resources.  A more manageable timeframe for review, allowing for continued responsible mining operations while environmental safeguards are strengthened, would be a more equitable solution.  Our future depends on it.

However, our progress and future are now at risk. The 50-year mining moratorium imposed in Palawan threatens not only the livelihood of our families but also the socio-economic growth of our entire community. Mining has long been a pillar of economic development, generating employment and funding essential services in our town. Without it, thousands of families face uncertainty, and opportunities for growth will be severely limited.

While we recognize the importance of environmental protection, we believe that an indefinite ban is not the solution. Responsible mining strikes a balance between economic progress and environmental sustainability. With proper regulations in place, we can ensure that both our natural resources and our people’s welfare are safeguarded.

We call on our lawmakers to reconsider the 50-year mining moratorium and allow responsible mining to continue under strict and sustainable practices. Our future, our education, and our community’s progress depend on it.

Therefore, we appeal to the relevant authorities to extend our mining operations and shorten the proposed 50 year moratorium to a more manageable timeframe. By doing so, we believe that we can continue our vital work, whilst protecting our environment and secure the future of our community in Rio Tuba. Please sign this petition as a mark of your support for enabling our sustainable growth through responsible mining.
