At last night's school board meeting, the three votes were unanimous! All school board members agreed to implement a new safety policy which would allow handheld metal detecting wands and walk through metal detectors to be installed if needed. Then they voted yes on the new visitor policy for safety. And then the big vote, to purchase the walk-through metal detectors and metal detecting wands PASSED!!!! They will be purchasing 18 walkthrough metal detectors called Open Gate Systems. They will also be purchasing 13 metal detecting wands. They will immediately be installing them in all the KUSD High Schools! I understand this is not including the middle schools, but they decided to keep a Safety Committee open so that they can bring up purchasing walkthrough metal detectors for the middle schools in the future. The 18 units that they are purchasing is going to cost $450,000. And the 13 wands is going to be another few thousand. They also will be taking this money out of the funds they already have! So no extra taxes for everyone who was worried about that. They are trying to not mesh together safety with referendums. Their top priority is safety now! Our voices have been heard! Every one of your signatures counted and was there last night! Thank you to everyone who signed and shared, you should all be very proud of yourselves! You made a big change in so many people's lives! High school kids can feel safe now going to school, and parents can feel safe about letting the high schoolers go to school! No more loaded guns or any type of weapon will get past these detectors! They said they have to be trained on them ( which is included in the purchase price) it's a two-day training session that has to be done during the week, two consecutive days, two and a half hours a day, so 5 hours total. Once they are trained on these they'll be able to start using them. I'm hoping in the next few weeks this is going to be the new reality, and hopefully pave the way for the middle schools to receive them next, and finally for all schools in KUSD!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
