Petition to Install a Crosswalk at Washington & Water Street

Petition to Install a Crosswalk at Washington & Water Street
The Issue
There is no crosswalk in the east-west direction at the intersection of Washington & Water streets. This crossing is a critical entry point to Newburgh's waterfront and the main gateway to Peoples' Park from Newburgh's downtown. Peoples' park is increasingly popular with residents using the space for walking, dog-walking, sports (softball), picnics, festivals, and other types of recreation. The Washington & Water St intersection is busy and dangerous to cross for pedestrians. There are stop signs on Water St, but there is no crosswalk and nothing signaling to motorists that there may be pedestrians crossing here. Last winter, a pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle by the Pizza Shop close to this intersection. The lack of pedestrian infrastructure in this corridor is a public safety and quality of life issue. The waterfront is disconnected from Newburgh's downtown and many residents complain, rightly so, of the lack of access to adequate green space in the city.
Putting a crosswalk here is one small step we can take to improve this situation. The potential development of the waterfront for residential and public transit purposes makes improving pedestrian infrastructure that much more important. Despite being located within the City of Newburgh, Water St (in this area) is under the jurisdiction of NYS. Therefore it falls to NYS DOT to install a crosswalk here. Assemblyman Jacobson's office has expressed interest in addressing this issue, but has requested a letter/petition to gauge public support. After signatures are gathered, this petition will be sent to Assemblyman Jacobson's office.
By signing this petition, you declare your support for the installation of a crosswalk in the east-west direction at the intersection of Washington & Water street in the City of Newburgh.
If you are comfortable, please share your name, affiliation (if applicable), municipality of residence, and describe how you use the park in the comments!
Also, please be advised, change.org may request "a donation" after signing this petition. Please do not be misled by this. We are not asking for any financial contributions. If you donate, that money goes to change.org, not to us.
Thank you.
