Petition to induct The Motels to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
The Issue
After many years of amazing music and dynamic "live" performances, it’s time to ensure the legacy of one of the greatest bands in the world - THE MOTELS! We’re asking fans from all over the globe to become one voice by signing this petition to help get THE MOTELS nominated & inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

THE MOTELS are fronted by the dynamic singer, songwriter, and guitarist MARTHA DAVIS. The band evolved from the band Warfield Foxes out of Berkeley, California. By 1976, the band had changed their name to THE MOTELS and had been offered a recording deal. Unfortunately, the first line up of the band broke up, and MARTHA DAVIS forged ahead to form a new line up. With the help of guitarist JEFF JOURARD, MARTHA was able to get new members for the band, and by 1978, the band consisted of MARTHA DAVIS as lead vocalist and guitarist, JEFF JOURARD as lead guitarist, MARTY JOURARD (JEFF JOURARD's brother) on keyboards and saxophone, MICHAEL GOODROE on bass guitar, and BRIAN GLASCOCK on drums.
On Mother's Day 1979, the band signed with Capitol Records. On September 17, 1979, the band released their first album. The album went gold in Australia, reaching the Top 30 on the Australian album charts, and #4 on the New Zealand album charts. The song "Total Contol" became a Top Ten Hit in Australia. went to #11 in New Zealand, and #19 in France in 1980.
By 1980, the band saw the exit of guitarist JEFF JOURARD. TIM McGOVERN, formerly of the Pop, would replace him. THE MOTELS' sophomore album, Careful, released on June 10, 1980, found its way to #45 on the U.S. album charts despite not having a single hit on the U.S. Top 100. In other parts of the world, the band found success with the singles "Danger," "Whose Problem?," and "Days Are O.K." The band had charted singles in the U.K., France, Australia, and New Zealand. The album went gold in Australia making it the band's second gold album.
A third album was intended to be released in 1981, entitled Apocalypso, but was shelved by Capitol Records. TIME McGOVERN left THE MOTELS, and the band moved on to record their fourth album which was released on April 5, 1982, entitled All Four One. Despite its rough beginnings, All Four One was the first U.S. to make the Top 20 for The Motels, and was the band's best selling album. The first single from All Four One was "Only the Lonely", which reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song "Mission of Mercy" also received enough airplay to reach No. 23 on the Top Tracks chart. In addition, two other singles, "Take the L" and "Forever Mine", also managed to reach the Billboard Hot 100. The album's release coincided with the emergence of MTV, and music videos were produced for both "Only the Lonely" and "Take the L". Davis won an award in the Best Performance in a Music Video category at the American Music Awards in 1982 for her performance in the "Only the Lonely" video. The album became the band's third gold album and their first U.S. gold album.
Little Robbers is the RIAA Gold-certified fourth studio album by new wave band the Motels. It was released on September 16, 1983.It features the hit song, "Suddenly Last Summer", which hit No. 1 on Billboard's Album Rock Tracks chart, and became the band's second Top 10 Pop hit in the US, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other singles from the album include "Remember the Nights," "Footsteps," and the album cut "Little Robbers."
In 1984, the band recorded for a couple of movies that were included in their soundtracks.
THE MOTELS released their fifth studio album, Shock, in August 1985. It sold approximately 400,000 copies in the United States. Singles released from this album include the American Top 30 hit, "Shame," and its follow-up, "Shock", as well as an Australia-only release, "Icy Red", that did not chart. "Shame" reached No. 21 on Billboard's Hot 100. All three songs were aided by popular music videos.
MARTHA dissolved the band in 1987, and released a solo album in November 1987. She had success mainly in Australia with her singles making the Australian music charts, especially her first single, "Don't Tell Me the Time" which made the Australian Top 10.
After a brief hiatus, MARTHA reformed her band with new band members, and by 2018, she had a solid line up and released the album The Last Few Beautiful Days, and released the single "Lucky Stars."
THE MOTELS, as of 2024, are still recording and touring.
