Petition to Improve Traffic Safety at Broadbent Boulevard and Cherry Street Intersection
The Issue
Urgent Request for Traffic Safety Measures at Broadbent Boulevard and Cherry Street Intersection
We, the undersigned residents of the Broadbent Boulevard and Cherry Street area, respectfully petition Clark County to address the serious traffic hazards at this intersection.
Background:
The intersection of Broadbent Boulevard and Cherry Street has a documented history of traffic accidents, property damage, and tragic loss of life.
• In December 2017, a tragic accident claimed the life of 9-year-old Raul Xavier Gamboa. A collision at this intersection between a van and a truck resulted in his untimely death, highlighting the dangers for vehicles and pedestrians in this area.
• On December 22, 2024, a stolen car was involved in a crash that destroyed the back wall of 5092 Jewel Canyon Drive. The property owner now faces thousands of dollars in repairs and months of work to restore the damage.
These incidents are not isolated. Residents frequently witness dangerous speeding, reckless driving, and collisions at this intersection, creating ongoing risks to public safety and property.
Our Concerns:
1. Traffic Safety Risks: The intersection is prone to high-speed accidents and reckless driving, endangering pedestrians, drivers, and residents nearby.
2. Property Damage: Repeated crashes into private property, such as the back wall of 5092 Jewel Canyon Drive, have caused significant financial and emotional strain on residents.
3. Community Safety: The continued risk of fatalities and injuries demands urgent attention and action.
Our Requests:
We urge Clark County to take the following actions to improve safety at Broadbent Boulevard and Cherry Street:
1. Conduct a traffic study to evaluate the dangers and identify solutions.
2. Install traffic-calming measures, such as speed bumps, roundabouts, or better signage, to reduce speeding and reckless driving.
3. Increase law enforcement presence in the area to deter unsafe driving behaviors.
4. Consider adding barriers or reinforcements along residential property lines to prevent damage in the event of future accidents.
Why This Matters:
Our community deserves to feel safe in our homes and neighborhoods. The loss of life, repeated accidents, and ongoing property damage at this intersection demonstrate the urgent need for intervention. Taking proactive steps now can prevent further tragedies and restore peace of mind for residents.
