Petition for Road Safety Improvements at Ashbury Public School

The Ashbury Public School P&C Association, alongside teachers, parents, and local residents, are calling for urgent action to improve safety at the Trevenar Street crossing. Despite ongoing concerns, this high-traffic area remains hazardous for our children. We urge Canterbury-Bankstown Council to implement essential safety measures, including barriers, raised speed bumps, vegetation clearance, and improved lighting. Join us in protecting our students—sign the petition today and help make our school zone safer for everyone.

The current conditions pose significant and measurable risks to children and pedestrians, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure their safety.

Reasons for Improvement:

  1. Increase in Near Misses: Over the past 12-18 months the Ashbury Public School Parents and Citizen’s Association have, in coordination with the school, monitored and reported an increased number of near miss incidents on the crossing involving children, carers, and pedestrians.
  2. High Traffic Volume: The crossing is situated in a high-traffic area, with increased volume due to ongoing building works on the Milton Street Chubb site, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
  3. Insufficient Safety Measures: Current measures, such as signage, vegetation clearance, lack of protective road entry barriers from the school gate side, and the current height of the speed bumps are inadequate for protecting children during extended peak hours at  the school (the school operates after school care and band programs, extending children crossing activity beyond 4pm often until 7pm).
  4. Proactive Prevention: Improving safety will reduce the risk of accidents and foster a safer environment for everyone.

Requested Actions: We kindly request that the council take the following steps to improve safety at the crossing:

  • Installation of a road entry barrier directly outside the school gate, preventing children from exiting straight onto the road crossing.
  • Heightening and extension of speed bumps to slow vehicles.
  • Continued maintenance of vegetation clearance at crossing to improve visibility.
  • Improvement and timing of lighting and addition of flood lighting on crossing.
  • Regular assessment and maintenance of safety measures.

By implementing these changes, the council will demonstrate its commitment to protecting the welfare of its students, residents and ensure safer spaces for children and families.
