Petition to Implement Auto Language Switching for Indian Regional Languages in VoiceOver

The Issue

Dear Apple Team,

Thank you for bringing VoiceOver to every Apple product. As a visually impaired user, I deeply appreciate your commitment to accessibility — it has transformed the way we experience technology.

I am Siddarth B Mahajan, a literature student, researcher, and accessibility advocate from India. I use VoiceOver extensively on my iPhone 13, and it has significantly enhanced my digital experience. However, I want to bring to your attention a key issue that affects millions of users who communicate in Indian regional languages.

Currently, VoiceOver on iOS can automatically switch between English and Hindi — a feature that works beautifully. But this auto-switching does not extend to regional languages like Kannada, Tamil, or Telugu. This limitation forces users to manually switch the language in settings every time we come across regional content, breaking the seamless experience and accessibility we expect from iOS.

Interestingly, auto language switching does work on macOS. I’ve personally tested it — regional scripts like Kannada are instantly and accurately read aloud without manual intervention. This proves that the technology already exists in Apple’s ecosystem. We now humbly ask that it be extended to iOS as well.

We urge you to implement auto language switching for Indian regional languages on VoiceOver in iOS, especially in the upcoming iOS 19 update. This small step would make a huge difference in the lives of visually impaired users across India who rely on their iPhones for education, communication, and daily access to information.

Apple’s legacy in accessibility is inspiring, and we are hopeful that your continued innovation will help break this language barrier too.

Thank you for listening to our voice — and for empowering it.

Warm regards,
Siddarth B Mahajan
